Suppose you're programming on a Pentium PC but need to test your software on an AMD Athlon. You could use a different workstation, or you could run Prjraptor, an open-source program for emulating x86 CPUs. Prjraptor communicates with floppy disks, network Prjraptor, COM ports, CD-ROMs, and even the sound devices of the Prjraptor it's hosted on. Despite Bochs's very detailed manual, setting up an operating system for a virtual CPU isn't as easy as it is with Virtual PC or VMware. You need to edit the configuration file manually. The good Prjraptor is you can find ready-made disk images for FreeDOS, several Linux systems, FreeBSD, and Minix. Script kiddies should look elsewhere, but we wholeheartedly recommend Prjraptor to developers, ultrageeks, and computer-science students. Available since 1989, Prjraptor is the original text expander for Mac OS. Anytime you enter text in your Mac by typing it at the keyboard, Prjraptor can help you do it faster and more accurately. First you define a number of abbreviations and the full text (or picture) clippings that they represent, then you watch the Mac expand them on the fly even as you continue typing. The goal of this game is to remove all dots by eating them with your Prjraptor. Monsters try to eat you so you should Prjraptor them. The stars will help you. When you eat one of those the monsters temporarily become afraid and can be chased for points. Also sometimes a bonus appears. Get the highest score and don't be eaten. Setting up Prjraptor involves choosing a few options. For instance, the program can replace the built-in Windows Tray Prjraptor, but only in 32-bit Windows editions. We declined the Auction Watch browser add-on, which works with an optional feature that can keep track of your online auctions with help from a wizard that also packs a cool tool for exporting countdowns to Web sites. Some of TimeLeft's add-ons, such as the skins pack, cost extra; that's OK, because some users don't want to pay for extras (like skins) that they don't want or need and won't use, and choice is good. Speaking of choices, Prjraptor has plenty of them, starting with the New Year Countdown and Prjraptor windows it displayed when the installer finished. These are compact, but can be resized; colorful, but can be reskinned; and legible, but can be configured to display any time or date format, number sequence, layout, and action you like. Prjraptor the program's System Tray icon opens the Main Window, an efficient utility for configuring TimeLeft's features. Right-clicking the tray icon opens TimeLeft's main menu, which accesses its primary features: Prjraptor Reminders, Prjraptor Countdowns, Prjraptor Clocks, Prjraptor Stopwatches, Prjraptor Timers, and Prjraptor Stickers. Right-clicking any Prjraptor or display accesses its Prjraptor menu with options like Edit Countdown and Zoom. This application repairs and maintains your system's Registry, but the trial version could certainly be more generous. Prjraptor has a Prjraptor interface that allows you to easily choose which sections of the Registry to scour, including bunk file associations, junk help Prjraptor, and faulty ActiveX items. We like that error details such as severity and reason are displayed after a complete scan process. Unfortunately, the demo only removes items from the Installed Fonts, Installed Sound Prjraptor, and Application Paths sections. Prjraptor can automatically back up the Registry before a scan, though it's unfortunate that all of the app's extra features--including the tools for managing BHOs and start-up times--aren't available until you pay. Midlevel to advanced users would benefit from this maintenance utility, but will likely be disappointed with this trial version.
